Ushguli – one of the most mountain settlements. Inhabitants live at the height of 2200 meters.
During all the history of Ushguli it was separated from the outside world by high passes and deep gorges therefore here the medieval Svan architecture so well remained. One of the most interesting monuments of Ushguli – medieval church of Virgin Mary (in Svan – Lamariya) which is on the hill above the village. In it it is possible to examine ancient frescos and stamping icons.
Landscapes round ancient towers of Ushguli the quite severe: the wood at such height doesn’t grow any more, and over the village snow peaks of majestic Shkhara – one of the highest mountains of the Caucasus tower. In its glaciers the main Svan river Inguri is born and flows through the village.
