Fortress Rabat is in Akhaltsikhe. The history of fortress begins with the IX century. From historical data it becomes known that in the XII century the princely family of Dzhakeli constructed the first fortress which turns into the residence of a family of Dzhakeli in Akhaltsikhe. The first name of fortress was “Akhaltsikhe” that meant – “The New Fortress”.

 

Since 1393 fortress transferred a set of losses, it was destroyed by Tamerlan’s army, in 1486 it was destroyed by the Mongolian khan Yaqub, in 1578 troops of the Ottoman Empire captured Akhaltsikhe.

Fortress a set of times was destroyed, and then is again restored. Soon fortress Rabat lost the strategic importance and started collapsing without due leaving.

 

 

Many years later in 2011 fortress Rabat started being restored, and in August, 2012 it was already ready to receive guests. Fortress is one of the most valuable sights of Georgia.
